ReplyDeleteThe computer is one thing that has changed life as I know it. As a student, its as a reliable resource that is vital to schooling. However, I believe this full reliance on the computer is detrimental to our lives for many reasons. One thing that I think we forget is that computers are still machines! They malfunction all the time and this can cost a student a grade or misinformation, ect. (Oh and Im not tryin to knock the DQ thing, no worries:) Also, while the availability of quick information is very helpful, sometimes it is incorrect and I believe this lightning fast approach to information can wear on our sence of patience. Over all, the computer is an essential tool for the spread of information and communication. I however, do not like the fact that I must be reliant on a machine on so many occasions.

ReplyDeleteThe largest advancement has to be the computer, being that I couldn't answer this question without it. It allows us to exchange information in seconds with people in a whole other country even! I couldn't have had a video chat with my friend in India in 5th grade without it! It has it's positives, but also great negatives. Now that we are so used to getting information in seconds, having to wait for anything- even a couple of minutes or hours- is so hard and we often complain about it. Also, it steals family members away at times. They will invest their lives into their computers and ignore their other family members- happens with parents or children. Also, it becomes bothersome when teachers depend on the computer for assignments and the only way to see if we did them is printing, and printers seem to be the most tempermental of devices. My printer often doesn't want to work at all. We are almost forced to rely on it for our grade, grades, and communication in life.
Another advancement that greatly has affected me, is texting. I personally am not good with verbally wording my feelings, and if I want to talk it out with a close close friend, texting is now the only way I can do that. I've been forcing myself though to step away from that slowly, because nothing can compare with a close spiritual or emotional comversation with a friend face-to-face. It's like my emotions have been lost to this device. It helps though with many simple things, like finding out assignments I may have missed and such.
@ Jordan...
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you. We have become a society that has more and more dependent on these blasted machines that we are just propagating our demise. Frankly, I see a world like Terminator where the machines take over the world, especially as there is a push to have Artificial Intelligence. So I definitely agree with you. :)

ReplyDeleteOne advancement that has greatly affected me and my society is the television. If one simply looks at when the t.v. came into existence, he can see how it has greatly affected our society. Nearly every child turns on the t.v. right when they get home. Their summers are spent watching hour upon hour of television. Even families that are considered to be poor have televisions.
The television has been more of a negative than a positive to our society. many negative impacts are linked to the creation of the television. Since its creation there has been a decline in education in our society. Children and adults alike choose depthless t.v. shows over in-depth books. we do not want to learn anything, we just want to be entertained. Also the television is really destroying the morals of our society. Current television shows desensitize people. These shows glorify actions such as adultery, disobedience, etc. what would have been appalling before the creation of the t.v. is now the norm in our society.

ReplyDelete@Emily. I strongly agree with you on your texting point. My phone becomes such a distraction in my life. I've gotten so used communicating with others through written word that is has become difficult sometimes to actually speak with them in person.
The cell phone has been the biggest electronic change in my life because it allows me to constantly comunicate with people. It's great to have when I go on long trips, when i need help, or even just when i'd like to talk to someone. The cell phone, however can be quite a distraction when I'm suposed to be doing homework or preparing for a test.
ReplyDeleteAnother advancement that has changed my life is the radio. I constantly have music playing of some kind and that can really be a distraction from my priorities and even my time alone with God. Being silent is the most important part of a QUIET time so the radio is certainly a temptation.
phones and texting have really changed my life for good and bad. its good cause i can easily contact and stay in touch with poepl i dont normally see or hangout with. but it can get very negative cause it takes alot of time out of my hoework time and plus it shifts focuse from actual converstions to electronical stimulation which this over time more of a robat rather then a person who can camunicate and talk wel with other people.

ReplyDeleteThe radio is not exactly a recent invention, but continues to have an important influence on millions of people's lives. Since its first broadcast on June 16, 1920,* it has long held political and domestic significance in America and around the world. The radio became a common household staple over the decades, something families could listen to together or alone. In the 30's and 40's it became a source of news and also political propaganda for the dictators of the time. For the families at home, it was a connection to the outside world and a source of comfort in a time of war.
Radios are less common today as a news source, or even a source of music. We have cell phones, media players and the internet for all of those things. Yet I still sometimes prefer the radio. I don't have to worry about picking my own music when I can just choose a station. I don't feel ignorant and disconnected from the world just because I don't get news updates and fancy internet on my phone--the radio gives news updates during commercials.
The radio I use is a piece of junk really. It's probably less than twenty dollars and still has an AM function (as if anyone used that! Wait, I do.) It's both battery and electric outlet powered, but since I never put batteries in it, I have to wait for commercials to unplug it and move it to another room. The cord reaches less than 3 feet.
I usually choose to listen to political talk shows on the radio while I do my homework. Sometimes they're very comforting, when I can imagine some sanity is restored to the world. Sometimes they drive me crazy and make me feel as if the world is going to end soon. Sometimes the broadcasts are nothing but a distraction. When I'm hanging on every eloquent word of the world's next greatest orator, it's a LITTLE difficult to organize my thoughts for an English essay due the next morning.
And HOW can I choose to shift my focus between the two? To my future, or to my future? To my English grade, or to "the big picture" of current events?
Tonight is Election night, but also a night "of six hours of homework!" as even Mrs. Walker has exaggerated (However, you all know that Mrs. Walker NEVER exaggerates). Every radio and TV in my house is blowing up with results, interpretations and predictions so much that it's difficult to concentrate on this twenty two page summary for English. Oh, well, the summary can wait until there are no more interesting talk show programs.
((*oh yeah, I know how to use my Euro book~ sorry for not knowing dates off the top of my head))
Wow... I love your comments and reactions to each others' responses. This is exactly what I want. Keep it up all of you.

ReplyDeleteThe internet and texting are two examples of technology the both helps and hinders all of us. The internet is amazing and allows rapid knowledge but the time most people spend on it is crazy. It's getting harder and harder to find people who don't spend more than an hour on facebook or youtube or some other website. The same goes for texting. I admit that i do spend several hours a day texting.
John G. @ Rebecca S.
ReplyDeleteWow. You said alot. I understand what you are saying, particularly about the radio. The radio has had lots of impact throughout history. It's sad that the age of the radio is dying.

ReplyDeleteThis new system is good but i prefer the old way more. I usually do these dq's at school which is when i have access to a computer. At the beginning of swim season i won't have access to a computer until about 9 @ night.
Cell phones or just phones in general have changed my life completely. Without phones easy communication would be hard to be achieved. That being said, phones have taken away social life, real communication with people has been changed. Its much easier for one person to text another person how they feel then to tell them in person, it's awful. Just walking around lunchtime at school or anywhere, you can see a group of people all sitting together but none engaging in conversation with each other, just their head turned down in their phones. My life has definitely been affected by phones but I'm not so sure if its in a bad way. I don't use my phone as most people do in my opinion, and if i have something important to say i ask specifically to say it in person because i feel it has more meaning.
ReplyDeleteComputers have also changed my life dramatically. Computers are being used now more than ever, we need computers for some of our homework now, for example, this assignment. I don't think computers have as much as an affect as phones but i think they still change people's lives drastically. Some people focus more on the social side of computers like facebook, myspace, or twitter. I use my computer for youtube all the time. I don't think computers are being used for educational reasons unless assigned to.

ReplyDeletei agree with your statement about phones or texting. When someone is texting there are being taken to a totally different place. Like i said people at lunch can be hanging out together at that same place, the lunch table. But can also be talking to people from stockdale or centennial and can engage in conversation as if they were there too.
I believe the computer has been one of the biggest advancement through time which has changed the way the population can learn and understand about our world. This technological advancement has substantially impacted my life in various ways, mostly for the better, but could possibly harm it as well. Keeping in touch with friends overseas is much easier using a computer rather then writing a letter, as it takes minutes to respond to an email. Though our society has found ways to manipulate this new technology, scamming has been a rather large part in some peoples life as they virtually steal from another individual through a few simple steps which can leave ones life financially crippled. Though thankfully, computers have brought education to a whole new level with online studies and classes.

@ Jordan,
ReplyDeleteYeah thats very true, we tend to depend on our computers much more then I actually realized. And thats also correct, it may have a psychological impact on how we may view certain aspects of life.
Two advances that changed my life would be the telephone and the electricity.
ReplyDeleteThe telephone changed my life by making it easier to send messages to others. instead of wait hours, days, weeks or even months for the other person to recieve that message they can get it right away. Its very helpful and useful, especially if there is an emergency my parents or anyone can recieve it and come right away. And they know whats going on or happned that moment not knowing a few days or months later.
The electricity changed my life by making it easier to do things at night. Now a days things we can do during the day we can at night because of the light. Also if you have a busy day you can do the thing last that you can do under the light. But sometimes there a negative side to them. The negative side to telephone is that there is less communication through talking. we depend on the phone a lot more now. With hanging out with friends some are so attached to their phones they dont communicate usuing verbal. The negative effect for light is waiting to get something done cause we have light we can do it under instead of depending on the sun, but then when later comes we dont feel like doing it and nothing gets done.

@ adam,
ReplyDeletei agree that cell phones have made life easier, but then its not good because we loose communication with others outside our phones. And with the computers comment i totally agree, we depends on computers so much these days. If it wasnt for computers we couldnt be able to do as much stuff as we can now.
@ Cody and Sam
ReplyDeleteThanks~ Texting is kind of killing people's social skills as well :(
Being polite is pushed aside for brevity. *sigh*

ReplyDeleteYa online school is okay, but honestly, I think it's a bit of a joke. Getting a PH.D online? People tend to cheat their way through courses or it's just too easy... you can take an entire course in a week by blasting through it. What do you even learn? And when I took online Driver's ED, you could retake any test or quiz you didn't do as well on. It takes away the punishment of not studying and receiving a well deserved F sometimes. Nothing can really compare to being in a classroom studying a topic at lenghth.
@ John Grant and @ Markley Silva
ReplyDeletei agree with u both
it has for sure changed everything!!

I think the biggest changes for me are TV's and Computers. These two technological advancements are killing society big time! TV's are turning our brains into mush and computers are sucking us into an antisocial black hole. These two things have also changed my life because now all school things are going to the computer, ipad, and TV is dulling everyone's emotions..... WHAT IS THIS WOLD COMING TO?!?!?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Adam the big changes for me are are cell phones and texting with them. It makes communication much easier and efficiant also if there is an emergency cell phones make it quicker to alert the authorities. Texting is also one of my advantages and disadvantages. Most teenagers these days spend plenty of time texting with their friends which to a point can remove you from reality somewhat. Overall the invention of the cellular phone is huge for the world. America and the whole world would never be the same if it wern't for cell phones
ReplyDelete@Adam I agree with your post. Cell phones are a great technology to have and my life has been hugely impacted by that invention. however phones have taken away some of my social life also. Its kind of a big deal these days when your too far in your phone to have a conversation with a human being face to face
ReplyDeleteone advancement that changed my life is the phone. phones have become very important to a point that they carry almost all our tasks for us. Lets take the Iphone for example, we can use it to shop, surf the web call and there are even some apps to cook. And the most amazing thing is that those apps never stop to be renewed.however, phones can also be dangerous. Some people use the phone while they are driving, and this can cause problems. young people also abuse them if they have internet.
ReplyDelete@ Adam,
ReplyDeletei totally agree with the fact that real communication doesn't exist anymore.Sometimes i feel ignored when people use their phones when i am speaking to them. Thats y sometimes i dont hangout with some of my friends
I think that the computer has to be the biggest technological advancement. The computer has a variety of capabilities. For example one can video chat with people from long distance, take pictures, make videos, listen and buy music, and it can answer almost any question. A set back is that our generation has this vast capacity for information that it is overwhelming. There is so much information out there that we use the internet to find the quick answers and as a short cut. Half the time we aren't using the internet to expand our knowledge. -Tori Tackett p-1

ReplyDeleteI agree, internet scams and viruses has caused some people extreme amounts of trouble by simply clicking the mouse. The internet has many positive and negative effects in the world.
